Pool Water Circulation

To prevent algae and other harmful microorganisms from building up in your pool, it is essential to have excellent water circulation. Algae can spread quickly during the summer season or hot weather.

Adding the proper chemicals and brushing your pool will keep your pool clean and safe to swim in. Proper water circulation also keeps the chemicals distributed evenly in your pool.

You also need to make sure that you clean the pump baskets and skimmers to remove dirt and debris and this will prevent the filter from clogging.

To make sure that your pool achieves the best water circulation, run your pump at least 8 to 12 hours a day during the summer season and 4 to 6 hours a day during the winter season.

Also, make sure that your jets are positioned diagonally and set them at the 8 o’clock position to achieve the best circulation.

If you only have one jet, all you need to do is to point the jet to the opposite side of the skimmer and point it downwards to enable the water from the bottom of the pool to go to the surface.

How To Clean A Cartridge Filter

Cleaning a cartridge filter takes approximately 30 minutes assuming that your filter has no damage. The first thing that you will need to do is to check the pressure gauge reading.

This will help you determine if your filter needs cleaning. If the pressure gauge shows a reading of 8 to 12 psi, then you will need to clean your filter.

Turn off the filtration system, automatic setting, and the pool power completely. You have to make sure that all the power sources are turned off to avoid damaging the filter and the tank.

The next thing that you will need to do is to release excess air from the tank by slowly turning the air relief valve. Once excess air has been cleared from the tank, unlock the tension clamps.

If you are not sure how to remove them, you can refer to your user manual. The locking mechanism may also be different from traditional tension clamps.

Once the tension clamps have been removed, set them aside as you will need to reinstall them later. Lift the tank lid and pull out the filter and start checking for cracks or tears.

If you see large cracks or tears, then you will need to replace your filter. However, if there are no visible damages, you can start cleaning the filter

Always use a pressurized water hose to clean the cartridge filter and work your way by starting at the top gradually going down to the bottom of the filter.

You have to make sure that you clean in between the pleats of the filter to remove dirt and debris. You can also use a cartridge cleaning tool to clean the filter.

If the cartridge filter is filled up with oils such as sunblock, you can use dishwashing detergent to clean the cartridge filter. You can also soak them into a filter cleaner. You have to make sure that you rinse the filter properly before reinstalling it into the filter tank.

Once the cartridge filter has been cleaned, the next thing that you will need to do is to apply a silicone-based lubricant to the O-ring. This will help extend the lifespan of the O-ring.

The next thing you would need to do is to place the cartridge filter inside the tank and make sure it is properly positioned and secure the tank lid and tension clamps.

Before you turn on the power, make sure that the air relief valve is open to release excess air in the tank. Check the pressure gauge and you should see a reading of at least 10 to 15 psi.

This means that the filter is clean and is working properly. However, if you do not see any reading, you have to reinstall the cartridge filter.

How To Clean A Sand Filter

Sand filters are also very easy to clean and maintain that is why many homeowners choose sand filters over cartridge filters. You have to clean your sand filters regularly to keep the water in your pool clean.

Read the pressure gauge and if you see a reading of 20 to 25 psi, then you will need to clean your sand filter, but if the pressure gauge reading shows 10 to 15 psi, it means that your sand filter is clean.

Another way to determine if your sand filter needs cleaning is if the water in your pool is cloudy. Backwashing helps reverse the water back into the sand through a hose to remove dirt and debris.

Just like cleaning cartridge filters, make sure that the pump and pool filter is completely turned off before you proceed with the backwashing process. You will see a series of options such as backwash, flush, rinse, waste, recirculate, and closed.

Select the backwash setting and turn the power on and leave it running for at least 3 minutes. Turn the power off and wait for the sand to settle and run the pump for another 3 minutes.

The next option that you will need to choose is to select the flush setting. You can use this option to reduce the amount of water in your pool.

This is useful if you want to manually vacuum or brush the pool floor. However, if you want to completely flush the water out of your pool, you can use the waste setting.

Water Chemistry

It is also essential to maintain the alkalinity and pH levels of the water chemistry balanced to make sure that the water is safe and clean for swimming. This will also keep the water in pristine condition. Water alkalinity levels usually range from 100 to 150 ppm.

The normal pH level should reach 7.2 to 7.6. Chlorine should be within 1.0 to 3.0 ppm. Biguanide must be at least 30 to 50 ppm and Cyanuric acid should range from 25 to 50 ppm.

Vacuuming

It is necessary to vacuum your pool for at least once or twice a week. You can choose to invest in an automatic pool cleaner or you can also manually vacuum your pool.

Skimming

Skimming is far easier to do than vacuuming your pool. Skimming will help avoid large debris from clogging the pool filters. Make sure that you regularly skim the water to avoid debris from reaching the bottom of the pool.

Brushing

When brushing your pool, you have to make sure that you brush the hard-to-reach areas such as the back of the steps, walls, and behind the pool ladders. Brushing effectively removes algae growth and buildup.
